Investigation from GADMO partner CORRECTIV: How Russia meddles in Germany’s election campaign

GADMO partner CORRECTIV has uncovered a new influence operation from Russia ahead of the federal elections. More than 100 fake news websites have been set up as a precaution to use them for disinformation in the election campaign. In several cases, they have already been activated to discredit politicians such as Robert Habeck, Annalena Baerbock, or Marcus Faber. The campaign is potentially very dangerous due to its organic spread through high-reach pro-Russian influencers in Germany. Behind it is a group nicknamed “Storm-1516,” which has already manipulated the US election campaign using the same methods and also relies on AI-generated texts and deepfakes.
